Identity Protector is a program that states it is a ‘tool to find and secure your Personal Information on your computer, as well as organize your passwords in one vault across browsers and lock them securely with a “Master Key.” Your identity is always protected, and you’ll never forget a password again’. While it may be able to do some of those things, my concern with this program is more with the incorrect detections that it is exhibiting and then asking people to purchase the product to fix them.
As shown in one of the images above, a scan of a computer using Identity Protector caused it to state that it found 624 telephone numbers as privacy issues. All of these phone numbers, though, were just regular numbers, and not phone numbers, that it found in text files. In order to fix these phone number you had to purchase the program.
Furthermore, as 28/66 antivirus and security products on VirusTotal detect this program as a Trojan, PUP, or adware program, I feel that feel this program should be avoided.
How was Identity Protector installed on my Computer?
Identity Protector is currently being promoted through advertisements that prompt you to download and install the program in order to protect your identity. This program needs to be manually installed and is not installed via adware bundles at this time.
While paying for Identity Protector may enable it to remove the detected registry entries, in my opinion many of the entries it detects are not issues at all. Furthermore, as Microsoft does not feel users should use these types of tools in the first place and that many anti-virus vendors detect it as malware, I recommend that you remove this program from your computer. To remove Identity Protector for free, you can use the removal guide below.
Your computer should now be free of the Identity Protector PUP program. If your current security solution allowed this program on your computer, you may want to consider purchasing the full-featured version of Emsisoft Anti-Malware to protect against these types of threats in the future.
If you are still having problems with your computer after completing these instructions, then please follow the steps outlined in the topic linked below:
