Remove MoneyFriend Adware (Removal Guide)

MoneyFriend is an adware program that installs various chrome extensions and installs a proxy server, which your computer is then configured to use. This allows the MoneyFriend adware package to redirect visitors to various sites, display price comparison toolbars, monitor web traffic, and inject javascript into web pages that people visit.

You can see an example of the injected javascript in the image below.

When installed, the Proxomitron proxy server will be installed on the computer and the computer’s browsers will be configured to send all web requests through it. Proxomitron is then configured to inject various advertisements and javascript scripts into websites that users visit. This further allows the developer to track what sites someone visits and to inject advertisements into web pages.

You can see the configuration file below that injects scripts from browsersecurity.info & browserinfo.org into a web page.

Proxy Configuration

When MoneyFriend is installed, it will also install Chrome and Firefox addons that redirect you to various sites, append affiliate tags to links, and display price comparison bars in web sites. Some of these extensions are forcefully installed via Windows policies. Some extensions installed with MoneyFriend include Furniture Guru, IndiaShopps, and MSoft Update.

How was MoneyFriend installed on my Computer?

It is important to note that MoneyFriend is bundled with and installed by free programs that did not adequately disclose that other software would be installed along with it. Therefore, it is important that you pay close attention to license agreements and installation screens when installing anything off of the Internet. If an installation screen offers you Custom or Advanced installation options, it is a good idea to select these as they will typically disclose what other 3rd party software will also be installed. Furthermore, If the license agreement or installation screens state that they are going to install a toolbar or other unwanted adware, it is advised that you immediately cancel the install and not use the free software.
